The Great Schooner Model Society
On April 28th, the Society met to conduct its annual race, with Marty Hayes' Bugeye winning the trophy. There were five boats available to race plus an additional three which were at the event but without radio controls installed. The race consisted of three races in which the winner takes all!
In the first race, the Bugeye "Ginger Lee" beat all comers easily into the wind because of its longer waterline length but lost ground on the downwind leg. The average was in the bugeyes favor and she won the first race with Bob Jones Schooner coming in second. The Second race was won by the schooner sailed by Bob Jones with the bugeye second. So with the score equal, a third race was held (after a delightful lunch) and once again the bugeye "Ginger Lee" sailed by Marty Hayes dominated the event, taking the annual cup as prize.
Mel Conant's Lynx is in the back of the pack in this photo, with the skipjack of Ahren Surgent to the left, Herb Jones' schooner heading toward the center of the pack, Marty Hayes' Bugeye is next, and Bob Jones' bugeye to the far right.
One of the Jones boys cuts toward the mark with the schooner, leaving his brother in the bugeye in poor position. The skipjack of Ahren Surgent is coming up to his turn fast.
The Bugeye "Ginger Lee", leads "Lynx" in run across the starting line toward the first mark. The Bugeye in clearer air, seems to be drawing better.
Herb Jones' schooner seems to be in better position (up in the wind) at the start but the Bugeye in clear air and with more way on beat him to the first mark.
