First Battle/Sortie showing of The BBNB

May 1, 1999 - The Brooklyn Battery Naval Brigade had its first showing for battle at Adm. Don Fisher's in MA. The following individuals were present:

Adm. Carl Camurati
Capt. Christopher Gamaliy
Lt. Cliff White
Lt. Will Hubbard

While 4/5ths of the members of the BBNB were present, only Capt. Chris Gamaliy's USS Chicago was battle ready for the day's sorties. Adm. Camurati's ITA Andrea Doria is 85% complete, while the HMS Invincible of Lts Cliff White & Will Hubbard is only approximately 25% complete. The HMS Invincible was present, as the "Rookie" Captains brought the hull for advise from veteran Captains.

The first sortie of the day showed the Chicago sitting well in the water with good speed and decent maneuverability. Carl Camurati worked on the Chicago, "tweaking" her guns and insuring proper ballast. The opponents consisted of members of the New England Dreadnought Flotilla (NEDF) including:

Adm. Don Fisher - USS North Carolina, Espana & HMS Valiant
Capt. David & Seal Tuttle - DKM Adm. Graf Spee
Capt. Ed - DKM Lutzow

While other members of the NEDF were present, their ships were in final refit for the 1999 year. (Coire you still should have brought the Tennessee :)

With the battle underway, the Chicago began to show initial ballast problems as the wind on the lake began to rise as the Chicago began to list to port. The automatic pump installed "kicked" on, but not enough to save the Chicago from sinking stern first it what was described as the "most gracious sink ever". The Chicago only fired 1/4 of her rounds.
All of the other combatants reported minor hits and damage.

The second sortie claimed the Chicago in the same way as the first sortie. Instead this time damaged hull fragments from the first sortie clogged the pump and she was unable to maintain afloat.

The final sortie of the day showed much improvement for the Chicago as she stayed afloat and managed to put some damage in Adm. Fisher's Espana's superstructure; knocking it completely off. The Chicago sustained minor hits to its superstructure with only 5 hits above the waterline.

All in all a good day for the BBNB and the NEDF.
